One of our traditions during the annual beach vacation is to watch the entire Horatio Hornblower series (not difficult since there are only 8 episodes to date). This A&E series follows the career of the titular character as he rises through the ranks of the British Navy. Played by Ioan Gruffudd, Horatio Hornblower is, according to Amazon, a “plucky” fellow, constantly finding himself in a perilous situation and then rising to the occasion with great aplomb. ”Honorable” is his middle name.
However, “…ardet perpetuo Sol” – as the ’sun shines perpetually’ upon Mr. Hornblower, one is apt to overlook the merits of another excellent character in the series. Our favorite character is Lieutenant William Bush, an exceptionally loyal and upstanding officer, played by Paul McGann. Mr. Bush is a quiet man, but his few words are most effective and surprisingly humorous. He is not bloodthirsty, nor does he ever show anything but the utmost deference to his superiors. Mr. Bush is the epitome of wit and wisdom, always calm and capable, and deservedly Horatio’s best friend.
Much like the Godfather, Mr. Bush has an answer for everything. Advice to new recruits? “Know this ship like the back of your hand or you’ll know the back of mine.” Ship cabin etiquette? “Only the Captain’s steward may enter without knocking.” Reproof for a delinquent chef? “Learn to cook… or I’ll cook you.” Encouragement during a difficult challenge? “They say one must always do what one dislikes. When I was a boy, I had to eat turnips.” His true feelings about turnips? “Never touch ‘em.” Response to suspected deception? “Do not lie to me… or I’ll string you up by your thumbs.”
Three cheers for Mr. Bush! “Hip hip…”

…hurrah! His response to a bad egg for breakfast? “Nothing worse.”

He has, naturally, a darling English accent.

What a guy!

He certainly does; everything about Mr. Bush is top-notch. Every time we saw him for the first time in the respective episodes (he is in only 4 of the 8), loud cheers were emitted and the applause was deafening. Can’t quite say the same for Horatio.

Horatio does seem a little bland and predictable. His nose is rather prominent. Mr. Bush, on the other hand, is entirely likable in every way.

Oh, STP – don’t bash Horatio! Prominent men have prominent noses. This is a truth universally acknowledged. And while Mr. Bush could never be termed “good-looking”, his charm and wit make up for it in every way

My thoughts precisely.

Oh, MonteCristo – don’t bash Mr. Bush! He’s certainly “good-looking”, just not everyone acknowledges this fact.

I seriously don’t think I would watch the series if it weren’t for Mr. Bush. He is the perfect friend in every way: loyal, steadfast, gracious, and as previously mentioned – FULL of good advice! I love him!
And another three! “Hip hip…”

Trash those movies and get the books. They span the entire life and give a pretty good acct of the British Navy. They are classics.

Trash the movies?? And give up hope of ever seeing Paul McGann play Lt. Bush again? You must be joking!
